Sony Ericsson Zylo Review

The phone is opening by sliding and once made this action, it will reveal the alphanumeric keypad. The keyboard has defined smooth buttons and their use is extremely simple and fast because they are slightly convex. However, the top row might present some problems, the finger hitting the top of the phone when you type.

The sides also have their utilities. On the left we find the slot for charging / headset / USB cable, on the right we have the volume button and that one dedicated to the camera and to the activation of the music player. The back is ‘equipped’ with the phone’s speaker sat at the base of the phone and the 3.2 mega pixels camera. The lid which is covering the battery is actually all the back side. Under the lid there is a microSD card slot, one SIM card and the battery location. In the case of the Sony Ericsson Zylo, we are dealing with a standard Lithium-Polymer battery that lasts up to 340 hours in standby mode and up to four hours of talk time or intensive use.

The phone’s menu is very simple, very intuitive. Basically it is the classic menu of Sony Ericsson handsets. It is activated by pressing the middle key. Zylo's menu consists of icons arranged in four rows and three columns. In standby mode, the phone displays signal, battery capacity, time, date, mobile operator and submenus.

At the messaging chapter, the terminal is normally presenting, supporting SMS, MMS, email and instant messages. Also, the phone has push e-mail functions. Push email is a technology through which the messages in your e-mail box are automatically sent by the client of your phone. Otherwise, SMS and MMS messages are stored in a mailbox, while e-mail keeps a separate inbox.

Unlike other sliders, Zylo's camera is hidden inside the phone. The 3.2 MP means a maximum resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels and the quality is good, especially talking about a phone that is dedicated to photography.

The bad part is that Sony Ericsson Zylo has not image stabilization, auto focus, LED flash and face detection technology, but has geo-tagging function. The camera is capable of video recording at VGA resolution with 24 fps (frames per second). The image not provides effects such as Negative, Sepia or Grayscale and ways of shooting at night or panorama.

The captured images have a decent quality, even better in natural light. However, the image noise is well kept under control, and the colors are not oversaturated in natural light. In the closed environment, the phone will lose focus and the images will not be of the same quality.

Sony Ericsson Zylo

Sony Ericsson Zylo is one of the newest mobile phones from the Walkman series released by the Swedish-Japanese company. However, unlike most models in this series, it comes with certain advantages which include integration of social networks Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

The new model is a multimedia slider with dedicated keys, but it comes with eight full pre-installed games. Currently, the Zylo terminal can be purchased on the local market in three colors, silver, black and pink.

Sony Ericsson Zylo was announced in April 2010 and it was officially launched on the market in July. The model is a slider that measures 103 x 52 x 16 mm and weighs 115 grams. The front and the back of the casing are made of mat plastic, which keeps the material traces of fingerprints. The company laid the emphasis on the phone’s appearance. The materials used are the best, the phone being covered by a solid and gentle plastic that does not easily deteriorate.

The front part of the phone is largely occupied by the 2.6 inch TFT screen with 256,000 colors and standard QVGA resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. Under it there are seven buttons, plus the central “Four” way navigation key. The D-pad buttons are placed in this way: on the top left we have a button corresponding to the thin media menu, as it is located the call button, followed by a key shortcuts. On the top left we have the key that activates the Google search button underneath the End / Reject call and opening / closing the phone button, and below there is the C (Cancel). The D-pad is compact, but the first key has so thin buttons that the user could press other key than the dedicated ones.

If the phone is in the music playback or games mode, the middle button will be used to navigate the menus or to control the player during the game. The ‘arrows’ indicate its course, the functions of ‘skip’ – forward or backward, the middle one representing Play and Stop, and the pressing up or down redirects the user to the available play list. If a game has been selected, the D-pad buttons take other functions, as indicated by the game. The main navigation button menu in the center has a circular shape. However, here the user will find a shortcut to the music player which is indicated by a painted sign on the music button.

Samsung R355c Phone

The Samsung R355C cell phone was released in 2011 for use with prepaid services. Its main attraction is the relatively large display panel and full QWERTY keyboard, which allow the user to type E-mails and SMS texts very quickly. One might argue that having physical buttons is an obvious advantage over a touch screen, because the keys don’t occupy precious screen space and also give an instant physical feedback, mandatory for fast and accurate typing.

Samsung R355c Phone (Source: all-samsungphones.com)

Looking at the Samsung R355c cell phone you can see that it has a very modern design and even it's dimensions are typical for today's Internet enabled phones. It measures 4.42 x 2.4 x 0.5 inches and weighs 3.67 ounces.

The 2.2” TFT display features 176 x 220 pixels in 262,000 possible colors, so it doesn't reach the minimum smartphone display size nor resolution, 2.8” diagonal and 240 x 320 pixels. The battery pack offers up to 5.5 usage time or up to 400 hours in stand-by, making the phone a practical solution for one whole day, as it's highly unlikely that someone would use the phone more than 5 hours per day. Some users may choose to listen to music on it, but in general I don't recommend such behavior, because many accidents happen when you're not hearing and/or seeing what's going on around you in public or even at home.

Cell phones like the Samsung R355c model have a very limited success on the market, as they don't support enough applications and their other capabilities are also very limited, if we compare them to slightly more expensive smartphones.

Samsung R355c Phone (Source: veritableplethora.com)

Samsung R355c Phone (Source: veritableplethora.com)

Internal memory of the Samsung R355c cell phone is limited to 1000 contacts and 55MB for pictures, applications and documents, while the microSD memory card slot supports cards of up to 32GB capacity. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do with all that space other than putting music on it and maybe some video clips, with the risk on draining the battery much quicker if you play a lot of music or video clips.

All in all the Samsung R355c cell phone is a great cheap solution for taking advantage of the offerings of a prepaid service, but advanced users probably won't be satisfied with anything less than a smartphone that runs one of the most popular operating systems (IOS, Android, Windows Phone, Symbian, BADA, etc.).

The standby screen of the phone allows manual changes. On the top there is a menu bar with different icons. Under it there is a huge digital clock with date and day of week. The operator logo can be located just below the clock at the bottom of the screen. Or it can even be disabled. The logo’s color can be changed as well. You have the option to place the timing right on the display. The menu is accessed by pressing the right key from the left. The right key is used only for the phone applications. You can set four of your favorite functions to the main central button. When the phone is in stand-by mode, the central area of the control button opens the WAP browser, establishing a connection, a solution that we don’t considered successful. In the main menu, the center part of the button fulfills its primary function, that of confirming the selection to the user.

The main display can be set in order to have continually the calendar; you have also the possibility of setting up the operator’s logo.

The phone's main menu consists of nine colorful and animated icons. The submenus are composed only by text. You can rapidly through the menu by using the preset keys. If you do not like the colors of the interface, you can activate some others from the four pre-installed combinations. The device will respond quickly to commands and you will not aggravate your work.

The internal memory of the phone has a capacity of about 30MB. Other 4 MB have been reserved for Java applications. If you run out of space, the phone comes with a microDash memory card. If you enable that option from the main menu, you can access the memory card from any computer by using a simple data cable, Samsung X700 being compatible USB.

One of the most important objects in the main menu is the File Manager. It sorts the information in 5 categories: photos, videos, music, sounds and more. Unfortunately, these five categories cover only those items stored in phone’s memory. Those which were saved on the memory card will be separately displayed. Multimedia messages are downloaded directly in the saved memory. If you want to pass them on the memory card, you have to do that manually.

Samsung X700 arrived in sales range together with phones like Nokia 6230i, Siemens S75, Siemens CX75, so its success depended largely on the price.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 appeared only in the form of concepts. Some fans have made versions that the phone would run the Symbian operating system. The main source of ideas is the online communication Esato. The model should have Symbian, touch screen, a large internal memory and a camera of 8 MP. Another X2's concept was created by a user within the same community. His terminal presents a Sony Ericsson XPERIA which runs an Android operating system. This phone would have touch screen, large internal memory and a decent camera, fast interface and virtual keyboard.

Initially, though many people believed that the new XPERIA will run Android, it seems that mobile will take on board Windows Mobile, version 6.5 operating system. These statements were made by the Skyhook CEO, Ted Morgan. In an interview, he said that Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X2 would run Windows Mobile and it would use Google technology to locate a person.

The new model from the XPERIA family appeared on the Internet in spy photos, but also in videos of presentation. Just like the first XPERIA X1 model, the new terminal is available in two colors, black and silver. The new Sony Ericsson seems to be much thinner than its predecessor, its form being similar to that of W595, a music phone from the Walkman range. Sony Ericsson X2 is running Windows Mobile 6.5 and it has the same user interface such as X-Panel. Also, the terminal comes equipped with an 8 MP camera, GPS receiver and a system of remote control for Sony PlayStation 3 game console. XPERIA X2 has a sliding hemisphere (the screen) that tilts vertically the screen just like Nokia N97. Also, the phone has 200 MB internal memory and a Qualcomm MSM 7200 processor. The phone provides also support for microSD card.

Motorola RIZR Z3

Here we are again in front of a model bearing Motorola’s signature. This is Motorola RIZR Z3, a new slide phone. Although at first we were a little bit worried concerning its size, our doubts were soon shattered. The materials of which it is made (metal and rubber) give you the feeling of safety, the phone leaving a good impression. The weight gives the phone a solid and a compact appearance.

The RIZR Z3 terminal is comparable with the launch of the Ultra series from Samsung. But in terms of technical issues and of software, the Samsung model is much higher. Even in terms of thickness. Its key Features are the exceptional design, the solid construction, the 2 mega pixel camera, the MicroSD card slot, the GPRS Class 12 + EDGE. On the other hand, its main disadvantages are the fact that the user interface is obsolete, does not have any Java 3D support, nor 3G connectivity and the video records only in QCIF format.

Motorola RIZR Z3 is built on the design of Motorola RAZR V3, from which it borrows the metallic look and design of the keyboard. The user interface does not seem to have undergone essential changes.

On the front panel you can see Motorola M logo, under it there is the TFT display providing 256,000 colors. There is a place just below the display, where you can put your finger when you slide the flip of the phone. You will also meet a set of four directional keys, with the center button to confirm. Around these keys we meet the joystick, the “C” button and key reception / reject phone calls. The phone’s size seems larger, but it enrolls successfully within the trend of the new slim models. After all, RIZR Z3 is only 16 mm thick.

The back of the phone is poor. Here we find the camera lens, the Motorola logo on the battery cover and the blue grid that covers the speaker. The phone is equipped with a BC50 Li-Ion 720 mAh battery, which lasts up to 350 hours in standby mode, and in talk up mode, lasts up to 6 hours and 40 minutes. When you remove the battery cover, you will have a surprise. The place where we find the SIM card is located on a dwelling that we find above the microSD card slot. To insert / remove the SIM card in the phone you should be armed with nerves of steel and with a sharp object. It represents a big minus that we give to the producer.

The phonebook’s interface is simple and easy to use. You can choose to display your phone contacts from your SIM card or the memory. Both lists cannot be simultaneously displayed. An interesting option is that you can save on the SIM card every new contacts that you want to add in memory. The phonebook capacity is of 1000 contacts but you can add to the agenda up to 2500 numbers. The contacts can be displayed either by name or surname. The search of a particular name is done by gradual typing.

You can assign to each added contact 5 phone numbers: mobile, home, work, fax or other number. This is the first tab for new contacts. The second tab is for your e-mail and web page. In the third tab you can add a picture and a special tone. In the fourth tab you can add the following information: function, company, street, city, county, zip code. In the last tab you can pass additional information and date of birth. When you add a birth date, the phone asks you if you want to add it to the calendar and if you want to associate it with a reminder. The phone calls are structured in four different fields: all calls, received calls, dialed and missed calls. The four fields can store up to 30 calls, divided into separate sections.

All messages, except the e-mails, are stored in a single Inbox. The phone also has a RSS feed reader that uses the NetFront web browser. When you type a message, there is a counter of characters that appears on the screen when there are only 20 characters to the limit of 160. The popular T9 dictionary is not missing.

At the “Files” chapter, we did not meet any new thing. You can mark files (one or more), you can copy or move them. You can also create or delete folders. There are 3 fields with lists of files: one for files from the phone, another for those on the memory stick and another for all files. The internal phone’s memory is of 64MB. Also, the device has a slot for Memory Stick Micro M2. It consists of a retail package of the 128 MB phone card, which is still insufficient for a 3-megapixel camera phone.

The display of the images can be made in list form with or without thumbnails. They also can be viewed from thumbnails as type 3 x 3 or 5 x 5. Also in thumbnail mode, we can display the video files.

Motorola RIZR Z3

RIZR's keyboard is very similar to that of the previous models from Motorola, the first phone that has adopted this design being the famous RAZR V3. It is perfectly designed, offering maximum safety and control. The numeric keypad is visible only when the shutter is open. We meet two keys that can be configured as desired by the user. Unfortunately, like other Motorola models, the menu navigation key cannot be configured. A novelty is the C key which is very similar to that seen in Sony Ericsson phones. It fulfills the function of correction. The backlight of the keyboard is dark blue.

The team that dealt with this model has solved a big problem faced by most phones: sun light readability. From this point of view, Motorola RIZR Z3 works flawlessly. The same can be said about the backlight. The display runs at a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels with 256,000 colors. In terms of sound and signal, RIZR successfully passed all tests. So, you can use it even in a quiet area with high noise pollution.

The graphical user interface implemented for RIZR Z3 is almost identical to that seen in Motorola RAZR V3. It has not suffered too many basic changes. Among them we include the possibility of navigating among the categories from the “Calls” menu, with the help of the keys ‘•’ and ‘#’. Thus, with these buttons you can access options such as received calls, dialed numbers and missed calls. This facility it is not met at the previous Motorola models. Other minor changes have occurred in themes and animations. New pre-installed themes of the RIZR Z3 are much better than those found in older models. The phone’s menu makes very well its job, having a very good reaction in terms of speed. Motorola RIZR Z3 has the possibility of activation of the “Flight” mode. It is an option that we should meet at all the new phones.

The phonebook can store up to 1000 entries. Each contact can be assimilated to phone numbers, e-mail address, home and work, a ring tone and a picture. The name search method is simple: you type the first letter of the desired contact. As we have mentioned, Motorola RIZR has the ability to use the ''#'' and ''*'' keys to navigate among the subcategories. The categories contain the 10 past calls, whether we talk about dialed numbers, received or missed phone calls. The date and time are shown when these events took place, but not, for example, how many times you were called by the same person.

Motorola Tundra VA76r Cell Phone

Motorola Tundra VA76R was made especially for AT&T, to serve as one of the most rugged and affordable cell phones available with a service plan. It was first released in January 2009 and still sells for use in AT&T networks.

The most important features of the Motorola Tundra VA76R cell phone are the resistance to dust, water and shocks, and the connectivity to both 2G and 3G networks. Other features of the phone are very limited, as you will clearly see in the descriptions below.

Motorola Tundra Cell Phone (Source: st2.gsmarena.com)

Motorola Tundra Cell Phone (Source: st2.gsmarena.com)

The body of the Motorola Tundra VA76R cell phone is relatively large, if we consider that it only holds a medium size 1130 mAh battery pack and two bellow average display panels: 1.05 inch external and 2.2 inch internal. The phone measures 98 x 53.8 x 24 mm and weighs 107g, just like primitive flip phones released before 2005. The resolution of the screens is what you'd expect, 96 x 80 pixels for the external and 240 x 320 pixels for the internal screen. The interesting part is that this phone runs Linux operating system with special Java-based MOTOMAGX application support, making it a kind of a smartphone.

About 100MB of internal memory is available to the user for apps, music and photos, but luckily it can be expanded with a microSD card (up to 4GB tested). Standard MIDP 2.0 Java apps are also supported, so you can install a lot of them on the 100MB for free. By default you have a few essential applications installed on the phone, like the MP3/AAC/MP4 media player, organizer and voice memo. As the Motorola Tundra VA76R cell phone also has A-GPS support, it should have software for it, although it's not mentioned in the official specifications.

Motorola Tundra Cell Phone (Source: cyberion.us)

Motorola Tundra Cell Phone (Source: cyberion.us)

The external antenna may be an outdated feature, but it improves signal strength and reduces radiation absorbed by the body. On the other hand measured SAR values are quite high, as the phone can reach 1.32 W/kg near the head and up to 0.80 W/kg worn on the body according to US standards. These figures are significantly higher than what you'd expect from a phone with an external antenna and the maximum data speeds are also unimpressive, as in 2G mode you can reach GPRS 48kbps or EDGE 236kbps, while in 3G mode the speed can go up to 3.6Mbps.

Battery autonomy doesn't allow a lot of Web browsing and application use, as the standard battery pack can be depleted with just 5 hours of voice calls or with 480 hours in stand-by. These figures make the Motorola Tundra VA76R cell phone more appropriate for emergency communication on slightly longer trips (10 days max).

Personally I can't see how this phone would be practical in everyday use in a large city or smaller town, so I only recommend it for use in extreme conditions like a construction site or in the wild (if the area is covered by your carrier).
